The building has been designed for ease of living for seniors by Architect Robert Reimers Inc. Examples of other work he has done can be viewed at his web site www.finespacedesign.com.
Attention to details in the organization of spaces, non-glare, non-slip surfaces, and a stairway promenade to encourage the use of the stairs for exercise are all features of the building. It has also been designed to higher energy efficiency standards to help meet our national Kyoto energy commitment, and to help you save money on your monthly energy costs. Each unit has unique design features as the individual unit layouts show.
The building also includes an elevator and underground parking garage. Each unit will have one spot dedicated for the resident's use. The Church is located on the ground floor with its own entrance from Whitewood. However, the space has been designed to allow other uses to occur at different times of the week as a wide range of activities, as decided by the residents, occurs. From playing cards in the lounge to hearing a presentation from a local politician in the Church area, a wide range of activities is possible.
One of the most important things about this building is the community it is going to create. Each household will become a member of the non-profit corporation and have the opportunity to share information about the ongoing management and operation of the building.
There will be a volunteer Board of Directors as well as professional property management from Affordable Property Management Inc. This experienced firm under the leadership of Maureen Barrey specializes in small buildings like Bethel Green giving it excellent service.
The future residents will be seniors, each with a reason to want to live in this neighbourhood. Many have links to family or friends in the area. It is not necessary to be a member of the Baptist Church to become a resident of this building. Rather, any senior with an interest in an active, community-related life-style might choose to join our community.
As part of the social community tea parties are held in the lounge to facilitate discussions about the operation of the building or the planning of social events. Already a gardening committee has been formed and an ad hoc art committee placed donated art throughout the building. The official opening and dedication service occurred on April 29th, 2007.
